Last month, I had the honor of photographing an unforgettable evening at the 22q Mom’s Retreat, hosted at the beautiful Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook, IL. Surrounded by serene nature and a strong, supportive community, this event was so much more than a retreat—it was a space for connection, empowerment, and deep emotional strength.
The retreat was organized by The 22q Family Foundation, an incredible organization dedicated to raising awareness for 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome, while providing resources, accurate information, and heartfelt support for families navigating this rare genetic condition. Their work is truly life-changing, and being a small part of this event was a privilege I won’t forget.
More Than Just a Group Photo
I was originally brought in to capture the group portraits before dinner—a beautiful way to document the shared experience and friendship among these resilient moms. But once I arrived and felt the energy in the room, I knew I had to offer a little something more.
As moms, we’re often behind the camera—capturing memories, celebrating milestones, and focusing on everyone else. But how often do we get to feel seen? To have a portrait that reflects our own strength, beauty, and light?
So, I offered individual portraits to any mom who wanted one. No pressure. Just a few quiet minutes to step into the frame and be reminded: you matter, too. And the response… wow. The joy, the tears, the laughter—it was everything I hoped it would be and more.
The Power of Being Seen
There’s something deeply powerful about being photographed not for work or for family, but just for you. Watching these women step in front of my lens with vulnerability, courage, and warmth was a gift. And each portrait we made together felt like a small celebration of who they are—not just as moms or caregivers, but as individuals.
To the Moms of the 22q Community
Thank you for trusting me to capture this moment in your journey. Your strength, humor, honesty, and support for one another were truly inspiring. I walked away from this experience feeling full of gratitude, and I hope these portraits bring a little of that light back to each of you.
